Guitar neck, treble clef and peace sign design
Black and grey · Flash
The design shows a guitar neck and headstock in black outline with fine vertical hatching on the fretboard. The guitar body is shaped as a treble clef, and a peace sign sits within its lower loop. Thin looping lines curl across the neck and around the lower section, and the artwork is black ink on white with no shading or colour.

Dear Tom, the Bramleys came early this year, so Dad has had us up the ladders since six, and my shoulders have gone to stone. The wasps are drunk on the windfalls under the far row and the whole orchard smells of cider before it's even been pressed. I'm writing because I finally went into the cupboard under the stairs, the one Mum keeps saying she'll clear out. Your guitar was in there in its case, with the peace sign still scratched into the body where you did it with a compass point the summer you were fifteen.

The strings had gone rusty and the neck had warped a little from the damp, but the sun coming through the kitchen window had warmed the wood enough that it rang when I tuned it by ear. I carried it out past the greenhouse and sat on the upturned crate under the old tree. I played the only tune you ever finished, the one with the wrong chord in the middle that you swore was on purpose. Two pickers came down the lane with their baskets and stopped at the gate. The older one, Mr Pryce, asked whose it was. I told him it was my brother's. Then I said, no, it's mine now, and he laughed and said that was how it went with everything round here.
So come home for the last of the picking. Bring the amp if it still works and don't tell me it's broken, because I already know. Dad asks after you every night and then pretends he hasn't. The top rows are still hanging and the cider barrels are waiting in the shed. I'll leave the back door open and the guitar on the crate, so you'll know where to find me.
Love, Jo. P.S. I didn't scrub the peace sign off. I thought you'd want to see it still there.
