Adult and child silhouette on the side

Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two solid black silhouettes of an adult and a smaller child walking side by side and holding hands, with the figures' outlines left as clean shapes. The silhouettes have simple, unshaded edges with a few pale highlights suggesting clothing folds. The tattoo sits on the side of the torso, with a hand with red nail polish resting above it and black lace fabric at the edges of the frame.

The queue along the concrete barrier had not moved for forty minutes, and Marta had counted the tiles on the cabin roof twice. Her grandfather kept her hand in his coat pocket, the way he did when the wind came off the river, and every few minutes he checked the blue passport against his thumb as if it might have slipped out of its envelope while he wasn't looking.

The booth ahead was lit white. A guard in a pressed grey jacket took their papers, looked at the photograph, then at the girl, then at the old man's face, and asked in a flat voice whether the child had her own documents. Marta had a card with her name on it, typed by a neighbour who had once worked at the post office. The guard turned it over twice. Behind them a lorry sighed and shuddered and went quiet.

Outside the glass, the low sun laid their two shapes across the painted white line on the tarmac. Her grandfather was tall and narrow in his hat and his coat with one button missing; she was a head shorter, her plait sticking out like a question mark. Marta watched the shadows join where their hands met and thought that from up here nobody could tell which of them was leading.

The guard stamped the papers, slid them back under the glass, and the barrier arm lifted with a clank. They walked forward over the line. Behind them the shadows stretched and thinned, and for a few steps they still reached back across the border, holding on to the ground they had just left, until the sun dropped below the lorries and they were only two people on the far side, one of them talking about lunch.
