Winged figure tattoo on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded tattoo of a crouched female figure with her head bowed and long hair falling forward, her back sweeping up into large butterfly wings. The work uses soft grey shading and dark accents for depth, with fine detail in the hair and wing veins. It is photographed close up on the outer thigh against a green garment, with only black and grey ink visible.

Sit closer, the lamp's been trimmed and the cold's coming off the harbour wall. You want the one about Mags Tully and the net-loft, do you? Right. She mended nets for the Halsey fleet the summer the herring went deep. She sat on an upturned crate with her head bent over the mesh and never once looked up at the boats going out. Her hands were quicker than anyone's, and her hair hung so far forward that her father swore she was hiding from the weather.

Then the gale came up off Skerry Bank and eleven boats did not come back. Mags stopped mending. She sat on her crate with her head bowed and the twine slack in her lap, and the women of the quay brought her bread and she left it on the step. Nobody saw the change begin. Her shoulders stiffened with something that was not bone, grey dust came off her coat like flour off a sack, and when the next spring tide came in there were wings spread behind her where her back had been, dark and veined like sycamore leaves after rain.
She did not fly off, though. That's the part they never tell at the Anchor. She folded the wings around herself like a shawl, and every dawn after she walked to the end of the pier and sat facing the water. The fishermen who went out past her came home. Every one of them, so long as she was watching.
The nets still hang in that loft where she left them, and the girls who mend them there don't keep their heads up for long.
