Totoro-style face on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a bare leg and foot resting on a carpet, showing a small tattoo of a rounded creature face with pointed ears, whiskers and a simple mouth. The outline is drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading, and the ink appears dark and crisp. The tattoo sits on the ankle, with the wrist and several beaded bracelets visible in the upper part of the frame.

Sit down, sit down, the soup is still hot and nobody needs to pretend they were listening to the vicar. My grandmother's cousin Iris married a man from the valley who had two left boots and one good coat, and on the morning of the wedding the rain came down so hard the church gutters gave up and poured straight onto the path.

Out past the bramble lane lived a grey creature as round as a loaf, with ears that bent over like the heads of barley and whiskers that caught every draught. Nobody had a proper name for it, so the children called it Bellows, because of the low laugh it made when a person slipped in the mud. It had watched that lane for longer than the lane had had a name, and it had never once been seen carrying anything but a leaf.

That morning the groom was nowhere to be found. Iris stood under the lychgate with her veil going to pulp, and then along the hedge came Bellows, ambling low, with the groom riding on its back like a sack of meal and a dock leaf the size of a tablecloth held over both their heads. It set him down at the step, shook itself like a wet dog, and wiped the vicar's spectacles clean with one long whisker before it turned and went back into the dripping trees.

When the doors opened, the step was dry. On it lay a single leaf, green and perfectly flat, and Iris, who had never in her life managed to stay dry on a Tuesday, picked it up, said nothing at all, and kept it in her glove for the rest of her days.
