Adult and child silhouettes on a calf
Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Two solid black silhouettes of an adult and a smaller child walk side by side, with the child holding the adult's hand. The figures are rendered with bold, slightly ragged edges and no interior detail, against bare skin. The image is entirely black and grey on a plain light background with a dark surround, and the figures sit centrally on the calf.

Old Tobias had walked the lane to the Friday market every week since the mill closed, and every week the rain came down on the cobbles as if someone had paid it to. The boy, Wim, was seven and wanted to run ahead to the pie cart. Tobias kept hold of his hand the way you hold a rope on a steep bank.

At the fishmonger's, Wim saw a brass bell hanging from a string over the door, swinging in the wind. He asked what it was for. Tobias said it was for telling the rain to stop, and that nobody in the town had ever rung it properly. Wim laughed and let go to reach it. The stalls were crowded, and the boy vanished between a barrow of onions and a woman carrying a tray of wet loaves.
Tobias did not shout. He stood still in the rain, as his own father had taught him, and waited with one hand open at his side. After a while the crowd thinned and Wim came back with a snail cupped in his palms, pleased with himself, and reached up without looking. The hand found his.
They walked home with the rain bouncing off the lane. Behind them the bell rang once, though nobody had touched it.
