Adult lion and cub on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A large adult lion with a full mane stands in profile, with a smaller lion cub seated on rocky ground to the lower left. The shading is smooth and detailed, moving from deep black in the mane and body to soft grey in the background and ground. The design wraps along the side of the ribs, and the image is in black ink and greys only.

The lion stopped beside a flat grey rock below the customs house and sat the cub down beside it, the way a man might seat a child at a station. Ilse brought out a heel of bread on a tin plate. The lion looked at the plate for a long moment, then at the white line painted across the road, and did not move. Neither of them moved again until the lamp was lit, when the cub climbed up onto the rock and sat with its back to the valley, watching the gate.
In the morning the captain from the far garrison rode up with a clerk and a paper that said nothing crossed the line without a licence. Tomas read it twice. Then he took the pen and wrote, under the goods column, one lion, one cub, both in good health, and signed it with his own name. The captain laughed until he saw the lion rise, slow and enormous, and walk down the road as if the gate had always been open to it.
The cub stayed on its rock until the old one was past the white line. Then it looked back at Tomas, shook the frost from its ears, and followed, small and certain, into the long shadow the morning made on the far side of the pass.
