Adventure lettering on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm extends across the frame, holding a small action camera on a selfie stick, with a rocky coastline and choppy blue sea behind it. The word adventure is tattooed on the forearm in black ink, using a serif typeface with solid strokes and light shading. The image is bright and saturated, with the tattoo in the lower right and the sea filling the upper background.

The camera came in on the spring tide, wedged in a crab creel that had been dragging the Hollin Point rocks since February. Dilys Pardoe fished it out with a gaff and held it up to the light like a bad fish. The lens was cracked and the battery had died somewhere under the water, but the little red light still blinked when she shook it. She took it home to the cottage above the harbour wall, because nobody else on the coast would have wanted it.

There was a memory card inside, swollen but readable. Dilys dried it on the Aga rail overnight and plugged it into the old laptop her nephew had left behind. The footage was mostly sky, spray, and the rock shelf sliding past at an angle. Every clip began the same way. The owner would hold the camera out at arm's length, grin at it, and say the word he must have said a hundred times, as if it were a password. Then he would turn around and the sea would take the frame.

On the last clip the water was glassy and the man was not on the rocks at all. He was sitting on a bollard by the harbour, eating chips from a paper cone, looking straight into the lens. He said nothing. He just lifted his arm, turned the word toward the camera, and let it show for a long moment before going back to his chips. Dilys watched it four times before she understood he was not boasting. He was showing her where he had been.

She set the camera on the dresser beside the tide clock, pointed at the door, with the card still in it. Whatever came in on the water next would have something to look at.
