The tide table pinned above the sink says we have until four before the causeway goes under, and I have still not told you about the boat. Mrs Abernethy at the post office swore she saw the Marian Rose go past the headland at dawn, sails down, drifting like a thought nobody finishes. I went out with the spare lamp and a tin of biscuits and found nothing but a gull sitting on the rail of the old slip, looking at me as if I owed it money.

The thing I keep turning over is the little scrap of wire your brother left on the windowsill last spring. You bent it into a curl the way you bend everything when you are working something out, a loop and then a long lazy hook, and then you said the sea always comes back to the same shape because it has only one idea and it is very fond of it. I laughed. I thought it was the sort of thing people say when they have had two sherries.
So I have gone down to the shingle every low water since, and I watch the edge of each wave lift and fold over itself, and I keep counting. Forty-one this morning before the water reached the marker stone. Each one has its own small hook at the top, neat as your handwriting, and each one is gone before I can finish reading it. Come home soon. The kettle is still in the wrong place, and I have started to think that is on purpose.
