Pine tree on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small pine tree stands on a short ground line, drawn in black ink on the inner forearm near the wrist. The tree has fine, feathery branches that taper towards the top, shaded with dense hatching and soft grey tones. The background shows a waterfall over rock, with the arm raised in the foreground and a green surface beneath it.

Settle down, the lot of you, and stop pretending you've forgotten the way to Scarrow Gill. Forty-one years and not one of you has been back up that path, I'd wager, though you've all got photographs on your phones. I'm going to tell it properly this time, because Dennis Ashby has been telling it wrong at every reunion since we left.

The pine stood alone on a shelf of grey rock beside the top fall, a thin thing with branches like wet fern, and it had no business living there. Miss Holt took us up in the summer of 1983 with clipboards and jam sandwiches. She crouched at its roots, scraped the earth flat with her palm, and drew a line in the dirt with a stick. 'That's the ground,' she said. 'Everything above it is weather.'

The storm came in October. The beck rose brown and took the footbridge and most of the path, and when the council men finally walked up in spring they found the pine still standing, bent over the lip of the falls like someone hunting for a dropped coin. Nobody had the heart to cut it down. Dennis wanted to call it a miracle. It wasn't. It was roots that had kept hold of one crack in the rock for longer than any of us had been alive.

Each of you went home that day with a cone in your pocket, and I know most of you lost yours in the bin by teatime. Mine is still on the windowsill. So hold yours up, if you've got it, and then go and find the ground under your own feet.
