Dear Mags, the weather has turned again and the ferry didn't come on Tuesday, so I'm writing this by the stove with the wind doing its best to take the roof off. You'll laugh, but I've started counting the ridges on the mainland from the window. Seven I can see on a clear day, and the eighth only shows when the cloud lifts off its shoulder like a sheet off a sleeping dog. Dad says they're the Sisters, though he has never once been able to tell me which one is which.

The lamp was serviced on Thursday by a man called Corrigan who talked the whole time about his knees and never looked up at the glass. He left a tin of shortbread on the step, which I suspect was meant as an apology for something. I've eaten most of it. I've also drawn the range on the back of the tide tables, just roughly, the peaks running left to right the way they run across the water. It looks like a row of teeth. You'd say so too.

I meant to post this at the harbour but the boat is still in the bay, so it'll go with the next one. Tell Owen the goats are fine and the blue jug is not, I'm sorry, it slipped while I was looking at the hills. When the sea goes flat I'll row over and see the far side of them properly, I promise, though I've been promising that since we were nine.
