Adventure lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is the single word adventure followed by a full stop, set in a small, lowercase serif typeface. It is rendered in solid black ink with crisp edges and no visible shading. The forearm fills most of the frame against a dark, out-of-focus background, with a gold bangle and cord bracelets at the wrist and a grey striped sleeve at the right edge.

Forgive the smudges. Father has finally agreed that I may travel with the grain fleet to Gades, so do not lecture me about the sea.

Before I left, I took your wax to Marcus the stonecutter by the river wall and asked him to cut a single word above the door of my room, something I could read each morning. He asked which word. I said adventura, the Latin for a thing that is about to happen to you. He laughed and said it was too long and too unsettled for a lintel. So I asked him to cut it small, in the plain hand the clerks use for accounts, and to finish it with a stop so it would not trail off.
He charged me four denarii and a jar of Falernian. The lettering took him two days, and when the work was done I found he had pressed the full stop deeper than the rest, as if he had decided the sentence needed to end before I did. I hate him a little for that. I have left the room exactly as he made it.
The fleet sails on the ninth. Tell Mother I have the tablet in my bag and the word in my head, and that the stop is there so I can find my way home. Vale, your brother Lucius.
