Black script lettering reading Once you go black you never go back, above an outline map of Africa with I heart AFRICA inside it, tattooed across a person's upper back.

Africa map and script quote on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black script quote sits in two lines across the upper back, with a thin black outline map of Africa below it. Inside the outline, the words I, a filled heart and AFRICA are set in a bold block style. The ink is solid black on reddened skin, and the photo is taken straight on with the frame cropped at the shoulders.

Sit closer, where the wind cannot steal my words. You want the road to Agadez? Then you will hear about Halima, who drew the whole continent on the back of a ration card with a pencil she kept behind one ear. She had no proper map, only a school atlas the rains had swollen, so she traced from memory: the bulge of the west, the long horn that leans towards Arabia, the Cape folded under like a thumb.

Her brother Ousmane drove lorries across the sand for the salt merchants. He laughed at the drawing and said the borders were lies and the desert had no edges, only wells. Halima told him a map is not for going. It is for coming home, and anyone who has seen the whole shape of a place will always find their way back to one small part of it. She drew a heart over the middle, where the dry well at Tin Nafi sits, and told him to keep the card in his cab.

One season his lorry sank to the axles in soft sand. He walked three days with the card in his shirt and the sun on his neck. When he reached her door, grey with dust, she did not ask about the truck. She unrolled the card, laid her finger on the heart and said, there, you are home. He wept first, and then he laughed, because no one had ever called him anything but a driver.

He never drove the salt road again. The card hangs now above her doorway, the coastline worn pale by a hundred thumbs, and every traveller who stops for water is asked to find the heart before they take a cup.
