The proof came back from the printers with the coastline of Patagonia drawn one hair too heavy, so Ada Vennell spent her lunch break with a magnifier and a sharpened pencil, correcting what nobody else would notice.

Her father had taught her that a border is a promise made in thin ink, and a promise should never shout. He had spent forty years surveying valleys that flooded every spring, and when he retired he gave her a folded world chart with one stretch of blank paper in the north where he had never drawn a single line. Nobody surveyed it properly, he said. Or somebody did, and then the paper ran out.

That evening she took out the letter that had arrived in March from a cousin she had met once at a funeral. He wrote in pencil and signed with a small drawing of a tent. He had gone walking, he said. The roads had stopped meaning anything to him, the rain was honest, and he would send word when he reached the edge of something.

No word came. In October the atlas proof arrived with the northern blank still bare, and Ada sat with the pencil above it for a long time. Then she wrote one line in the margin for the engraver: leave this empty, nobody needs telling where to go.
