Ines had been tracing the coastline from memory for an hour before she admitted the Gulf of Guinea was wrong. Her father's atlas lay open on the kitchen table in Peckham, its spine cracked at the page she had been avoiding, and the pencil in her hand kept drifting east toward the Horn as if the continent had shifted under the paper.

He had never drawn maps himself. He sold them, in a narrow shop off Charing Cross Road that smelled of glue and damp card, and he could tell a Dutch engraving from a Victorian copy with one squint. What he could not do was leave a blank. Every sheet he framed for a customer had a small cartouche in the corner, and every cartouche had a word he added himself in tiny copperplate, the way other men signed cheques.

Ines found the outline he had traced onto the back of an old receipt, the ink gone brown with age. Beside the eastern bulge, where the Indian Ocean would be, he had written nothing. Then, in the margin, faint and careful, was the word love with a line under it, as if he had been unsure it would be allowed on a map.

She laughed, then stopped. She fetched a biro, settled the receipt flat, and copied the shape exactly, the bulge, the gulf, the long slope down to the Cape, until the pencil ghost and the biro became one line. The word she left where he had put it, over the east, and she pressed hard enough to feel it through the paper.
