World map outline on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A clenched fist is raised towards the top of the frame, with the wrist showing a thin black outline tattoo of the world map. The continents are drawn with single, even linework and no shading. The photograph is monochrome against a dark, textured background, which emphasises the crisp lines of the design.

Dear Ruth,

The lift in Calder House has been out since Tuesday, so I have been taking the stairs to the eleventh floor with a bag of shopping on each arm and your old atlas wedged under my elbow. Mrs Okafor on six says it is good for the knees. She has never once carried the atlas.
I finished the drawing last night. You will laugh, but I did it the way you taught me: one line without lifting the biro, no shading, no going back over the bits I got wrong. The Americas came out too long and Australia sits a bit low, like it is sulking. Africa was the hard part. I kept thinking of the coast where you said the water is the colour of tea with milk, and somehow my hand went there and stayed. I took it to a studio on Hartley Road on Saturday, and it is permanent now, one thin line that will not come off.
The letter from the housing office arrived on Friday. They want the flat back by March, and the new place is on the far side of the estate, overlooking a car park. So I have decided. I am taking the early bus to the coast, the one that smells of diesel and oranges, and I am going to sit on the harbour wall until somebody tells me where to go next.
I will send a photo of the finished piece once it has healed. Write back and tell me which country I have got wrong. I know you will find one.
Love, Mae
