The panhandle is wrong. I drew it three times on the back of the feed store receipt and it kept coming out like a boot somebody had stepped in, so you will have to forgive me and take it as read. Your grandfather could draw the whole state in the dark with a carpenter's pencil and never once lift it off the paper. I always said he cheated.

Your mother says the rain in Leeds goes sideways and never stops, and that you have bought a kettle with a whistle so loud the neighbours knock on the wall. I am glad. I wanted you somewhere the kettle sounds like something. Here the stock pond has gone to cracked mud since August, and the Hendersons' bull got out again and walked the whole length of the county road like he had a appointment in town.
I put the heart where the kitchen table sits, a little south of the middle, because that is where the light comes through at four o'clock and where we spread the maps out every summer you were small. I know it is not on any map the government printed. Maps are for people who have never had to find their way home by the smell of a porch light.
So pin the receipt up where you can see it from your own table. When the panhandle looks wrong to you, remember who drew it, and that the heart was always the part that mattered. Ring me Sunday and tell me whether that kettle has frightened the neighbours yet.
