Fine line crossed branches on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of two thin, crossed branches with short side twigs sits on the inner wrist of a hand held up against a plain pale wall. The linework is delicate and even, drawn in black ink with no shading. The ink is the only colour in the frame, and the tattoo is placed centrally on the wrist, with a dark strap and gold buckle just above it.

The Warden of Carrowmere had two rules for the hedge gate, and the first was that nobody crossed it while frost still clung to the crossbars. I broke it at eleven, dropping through the thorn with a torn sleeve and a hare I had no right to be carrying. Old Maud caught me by the collar and did not shout. She sat me on the step and showed me how to lay one branch over another, how to notch the ends so they bit, and how a gate made of two sticks that wanted nothing from each other would fall the first time the wind came off the moor.

I learned that winter. By spring I could weave a cross so tight that a child could climb it and nothing gave. Maud died in the year the Chancellor came north with his surveyors and his painted maps. He wanted the gate taken out, the hedge cleared, the road straightened for the salt carts. I told him the gate was older than his maps and held together by the crossing, not by either branch. He laughed and said a king's writ had no need of crossings.
He sent men with axes at first light. I was already up on the lintel, nursing a fresh cut at the join, and I did not climb down. The first man stopped below me, looked at the knot where the two boughs held each other, and leaned his axe against the post instead. By noon the surveyors had gone back the way they came. The road still bends round Carrowmere, the salt carts swinging wide of a gate that has never once been cut.
