Cat beamed up by a UFO in an oval frame

Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A cat stands in a beam of light rising from a flying saucer in the upper part of an oval frame. Behind it sit clouds, a crescent moon, stars and a row of pine trees, all drawn with dense, engraved-style linework and hatched shading. The design is entirely black and grey and fills the frame neatly against the leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pruitt swore the saucer came down over the pine plantation at a quarter past two, and she swore it on her late husband's Bible, which was about all the bank had left her. Nobody in Haddon Falls believed her until Tom Ketteridge, who drove the milk lorry, said he had seen a light too, though he had been looking at the moon and not the trees. I was twelve that summer and mostly bored, so when Mrs Pruitt came to our back door in her slippers, I was the one sent to fetch the torch.

Her cat, Mister Pickles, was a grey tabby with one ear folded from a fight with a fox. He had gone out after supper as he always did. She left a saucer of milk on the step and sat up with the lamp lit, and at first light she told us the cat had gone up the beam like a man climbing a rope, paws out, not once looking back. Dad said she was grieving. Mum said nothing and put the kettle on.

We walked up through the pines with the torch. The grass lay flattened in a ring as wide as our kitchen, and it smelt of hot pennies. In the middle I found a silver button with no holes in it, cold as a coin from a well. Mrs Pruitt took it from me, turned it over for a long time, and said the moon had been very bright that night and the stars had been out in their rows like seats at the pictures.

Pickles came back nine days later, dry as a bone, sitting on her step with his folded ear turned towards the trees. He drank the milk and did not purr. That evening I looked up and saw only the crescent moon and a scatter of stars above the pines, and the cat sat watching that same patch of sky, as though he had left something up there and meant to go back for it.
