Bear and flowers on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large black and grey tattoo of a bear, shown in profile, fills the outer thigh. Its fur is rendered with dense, shaded strokes, and the bear is surrounded by leaves, open flowers, a small ship with sails and a bird near the lower edge. The photograph is taken indoors in soft daylight, with a hand pulling up a brown fabric at the top of the frame.

Sit closer, the lamp is low and the wind is trying the shutters the way my brother used to try the pantry door. You want the bear of Harrowgate Pass? Then listen, because the bear does not care whether you are listening. She came down off the scree every spring when the willow catkins opened, and she walked the old drover's track with her nose to the ground, reading the whole valley like a letter she had written herself. Nobody in Thornbeck had seen her face clearly, only the flank and the lifted shoulder, the way you see a neighbour turning away in the market.

The year the mill closed, a girl named Ada Pennick went up after her with a tin of salt fish and a pocketful of pins. She followed the bear past the hawthorns, past the field where the poppies grew in the cart ruts, and down to the lake where a small wooden boat sat rotting on its side. The bear stopped there. She looked at the boat a long while, and Ada swore afterwards that the animal was counting something, the way a widow counts spoons.

Ada did not sail anywhere. She sat on the shingle and ate her fish, and the bear ate the bird that had been pecking at the rushes, and by evening they had reached an understanding, which is the only treaty the hills have ever honoured. When Ada walked home the poppies were nodding in the dark like they had been told a secret. Her mother said she came back smelling of woodsmoke and salt. Ada said the bear had shown her where the boat was going, and that it was not going anywhere at all, and that this was the kindest thing anybody had told her that year.
