Alice in a frame with apples on the stomach
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A close crop of a torso wearing a black and white daisy-print bikini, showing a tattoo of a cartoon Alice resting her chin on her hand inside an ornate oval frame. The frame is surrounded by red apples with darker shading and playing card shapes at the edges. The linework is bold and outlined, with soft shading and vivid colour in the hair, face and fruit against a plain sandy background.

Mrs Hollis wanted the apples repainted before the August bank holiday, and Ruth had told her twice that the varnish needed a week to cure. The booth stood at the end of the pier with its shutters down, and inside, the oval frame hung above the coconut shy where the lamplight never quite reached. Ruth had carried the painting out of the storeroom herself. The girl in it had been painted by someone who knew how to make a face look as though it were waiting for a late tram.

Ruth set the frame on a trestle and began scraping flaked red from the fruit. Beneath the third coat she found a playing card, the queen of hearts, tucked behind the canvas like a letter nobody had posted. Someone had written on the back in pencil: Do not let her finish the game. Ruth laughed and slipped it into her apron pocket, where it sat against her hip all afternoon like a cold coin.
That night the sea fog rolled up the slipway, and when she went back to check the varnish, the girl had moved her chin from her hand to her knee. The apples looked wetter now, sharp and glossy in the lamp, and the card edges had curled as if something had been shuffled. Ruth stood a long while with her cloth. Then, because it was nearly midnight and there was nobody to tell, she sat on an upturned crate and mixed a little ochre into the white.
By dawn the hand was back under the chin, and the girl was looking out past the frame at the grey water, as though she had decided the game could wait until the tide turned.
