Small wave tattoo on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A small black wave outline sits on the upper shoulder, drawn with thin, even linework and no shading. The head is cropped out, and the frame shows a turquoise pendant on a dark cord necklace, a white crochet bikini strap and a blue patterned open shirt. The photo is warmly lit with strong sunlight and shadow across the skin.

The band at the Marine Ballroom finishes the foxtrot before the sea does, and you are still holding the wrong hand when the lights come up. Mrs Achterberg from the ticket booth is sweeping sequins off the boards with a broom older than the pier. Outside, the tide has crept under the planks, and the whole floor hums with it.

Your sister says you have been staring at the window all evening. She is right. Through the salt-flecked glass, a single swell rolls in from the dark, lifts, and folds over itself at the end of the groyne. You have counted eleven of them since the last waltz. Ray, the trumpeter, says the twelfth is always the big one, and that you should never trust a sea that waits for a man to finish his pint.
Ray is in the doorway now, coat over one arm, cornet case in the other hand. He nods at the window. "Hold the last dance for me," he says, "and I'll walk you home by the harbour wall." You tell him the harbour wall is under water. He grins and says that is exactly why.
The twelfth wave breaks against the piling with a crack like a dropped tray, the whole hall goes quiet, and you find you are already smiling, already reaching for your coat.
