Black and grey rose on thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic black and grey rose, shaded with soft gradients and fine linework, sits on the outer upper thigh. Angular triangular shapes frame the rose at the base and sides, adding a geometric element. The photo shows a person lying on white bedding, cropped from the midriff to the knee, with the tattoo in the lower centre of the frame.

Sit down, sit down, the kettle can wait. You want the rose story, not the weather, so listen. Old Mrs Abernathy kept the walled garden behind the vicarage at Little Ashby, and she kept one black rose in it, though nobody had ever seen it bloom. Black roses don't, she said. They only darken with the years, the way a bruise does, or a good hat.

Her husband, Walter, a surveyor who measured everything but his own temper, swore he would dig the thing out the spring the council came to lay the new road. He took a spade to the root at dawn with his set square still in his coat pocket, and he cut one stem, and the stem bled sap as dark as ink. He sat down on the wet step and did not get up until the milk man found him.
Now here is the part I'm telling you because nobody else will. The rose came back the next spring, but not in the bed. It came up through the cracks of three stone steps, each step cut at a corner like a triangle, and the petals opened grey, shaded in close with a pencil the way a draughtsman shades a drawing, so every petal had a soft side and a sharp one. Mrs Abernathy chalked the triangles round it herself, so the council men would know to go round.
And that is why, when you ask the old girl at the corner shop about those stone steps, she will tell you they lead nowhere now, then ask whether you're going to drink that tea or let it go cold. Mind the third step. It is still sharp.
