A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By four in the morning the rose petals on the shelf had turned the colour of stewed tea, and I knew the ovens were running hotter than the dial said. Nan built this bakery on Fenwick Lane with a brick oven and one stubborn rule: nothing leaves the back room without a little death in it. Every Sunday loaf carried a sugar skull the size of a plum, and folk bought them for christenings and wakes alike, which Nan said was the same thing wearing different hats.

The rule nearly ended in March, when the council inspector asked why we were selling novelty mortality, and Tomasz, our new lad, offered to scrape the skulls off the crusts. I stopped him. We spent that night among the flour sacks with Nan's ledger, where she had written, in pencil gone silver, that the rose is for the living and the skull is for the bread, because a loaf is only ever eaten by someone still alive.

Now I piped the last rose onto the tray, pressing the petals open with the tip of the nozzle the way she taught me. The skull sat beside it, cracked a little at the brow where the sugar had set too fast. I did not fix it.

When the sun finally came up over the chapel roof, the window turned gold and the whole shop smelled of scorched sugar and yeast. I slid the tray onto the counter and left the door unlocked, the way Nan always did, for whoever needed a loaf before the day started.
