Zombie nurse and skulls on a leg
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A large tattoo shows a female face with a red cross on her cap, pale skin, pink-lit eyes and torn, bloodied flesh along the jaw. Below her are a skull, exposed ribs and a second eye that wraps onto the top of the foot. The shading is smooth and detailed, with red, pink, brown and green tones against the skin.

The snow had been coming down the Vessan Pass for three days when the first of them sat up on the trestle table and asked for its boots. Sister Hild Marrow did not look up from the splint she was binding. She only said the boots were under the bench, and that it should mind the lamp.

We kept them in the east barn, the ones who came back wrong. There were eleven by the second week, and Hild counted them every dawn the way other women counted rosary beads. She gave them ration tins with the labels soaked off, so no one would argue over which was which. Their eyes took the paraffin light and held it, a pink that never quite went out, and I learned to read a ward by that colour the way a sailor reads cloud.
On the ninth night the bell at the pass house rang without a rope. Hild went out with her cap pinned crooked and her red cross stitched fresh that afternoon, because she said a nurse should be seen plainly even by the dead. I followed with the lamp. Under the drifts we found the ribs of the old chapel, and beside them a skull the snow had kept, and a single eye set in the frozen mud, watching the road.
Hild knelt and laid her palm over it. The eye blinked once, slowly, the way a patient does when told the worst is over. 'Good,' she said. 'Now you can carry the rest of us down.' We did not sleep that night. By morning the pass was open, and the bell never rang again, though I still hear it when the snow comes down.
