Pocket watch, gears and rose design
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a tattoo design centred on an open pocket watch with Roman numerals and visible inner gears. Two cogs sit to the lower right, a rose is drawn to the upper right, and scrolling foliage and dripping line details fill the left side. The work uses fine black linework with light shading on a plain grey background.

The Dodgem man swore the watch had stopped the night the big wheel went down, and that it hadn't ticked since, so when Mr Ansell slid it across the workbench at me I did what I always do with a dead thing: I opened it up. Inside, the brass was furred with fair dust and the wheels sat in their cage like sleeping cats. Someone had stamped the numerals by hand, a little crooked at the nine, and tucked a dried rose petal under the back cover, brown as stewed tea.

I spent the afternoon with a pin and a bottle of clock oil, the wagon door open to the drizzle and the generator grumbling outside. Each cog I cleaned loosened another thread of the story. The watch had belonged to Lottie Crane, who threw rings at the rose stall until she married a Scot and went north. She'd left it behind, the Dodgem man said, because the hands had been running fast since the day she went, and she wanted the fair to know it.
By dusk the escapement caught. I held the case to my ear and it sounded like rain on a tin roof, steady and unhurried. I wound it, set the hands to true time, and waited for the second hand to climb past the twelve before I trusted it.
Mr Ansell came to the door with a cup of tea and a face like thunder. "Well?"
"It's keeping time," I said, and I pressed the petal back under the cover where it had been, the way you'd fold a letter into its envelope before you post it.
