Neo-traditional style tattoo on an upper arm showing a Cheshire Cat grin, cupcake, top hat, teacup, red spotted mushrooms and playing cards above a 'Drink Me' bottle.

Alice in Wonderland upper arm piece

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A black and grey tattoo with red accents covers the upper arm, with a large Cheshire Cat grin at its centre beneath a cupcake and a top hat. Red spotted mushrooms, a teacup with red hearts, playing cards and a red bow sit among swirling smoke, which rises from a bottle labelled 'Drink Me'. Shading is smooth and the linework is bold and clean.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the fire, because the orchard lamps have been dimmed since the grid went quiet and I won't tell this one twice. Down past the salt marsh at Cheshire, where the rail line stops at a heap of rust, there stood a bottle on a shelf in the Lantern Hall. It wasn't glass, the old tellers say, but something grown in a vat by people who had forgotten how to make glass. Its label was a heart of stitched lettering, and the words on it read DRINK ME, which was not a suggestion anyone in that hall was willing to take.

Old Mabel Quarry, who kept the hall's ledger, swore the smoke pouring from its neck tasted of toffee and tea. Each night it rose and curled into a grin as wide as a cart, and the grin hung in the rafters, chewing on the day's gossip. Children learned to count their teeth by it. Men in spotted caps, the toadstools having sprouted along every gutter after the rains, came in to argue with it and went out walking backwards.

Then came the year the council sent a clerk with a clean collar and a satchel of playing cards, insisting every debt be settled in full. He sat beneath the grin and laid his cards in neat rows of hearts across the table. The grin asked him, not unkindly, whether he had ever been small enough to fit through a door. He said he had not. It said that was a pity, and poured him tea from a cup with red hearts painted round its rim, and he drank it, because everybody does.

By morning his collar was still spotless, but every card in his satchel showed the same face, and the bottle on the shelf had been refilled with smoke. Now when the council comes, they bring a cupcake and a little tin of tea, and they leave the bottle exactly where it sits.
