Sewing notions and yarn ball on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a teal yarn ball at the centre, wrapped with a yellow measuring tape marked 10 and 11, with grey scissors above and a purple thread spool to the top right. A red tomato pincushion with pins, a needle with trailing thread, and small buttons sit around the lower edge. Bold dark outlines and flat, bright colour fills give it a classic, graphic look on the skin, with the design filling the limb.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Penrose set the knitting bag on the hatch counter as carefully as if it held eggs, and the yarn ball inside gave a soft, unhurried thump against the wood. Clare had worked lost property at Denham Junction for eleven years and knew the sound of things that had been loved too hard to be left behind. Outside, the 7.42 to Ashbury was sighing at platform two with its doors still open.

The ticket had been filled in by a porter who wrote as if he were angry at the pen: one knitting bag, contents listed as scissors, tomato pincushion, six buttons, one spool, needle still in work. Clare read it aloud. Mrs Penrose nodded at the needle as though it were a patient relative. 'That's the important part,' she said. 'My sister started a sleeve on it in March, and I promised I'd finish the cuff before the wedding.'

Clare lifted the yarn out. A yellow tape measure, marked 10 and 11 in faded black, was wound twice round the ball and tucked under itself. The needle ran out of the teal wool like a thin silver tail, and the work at its end was a sleeve, nearly a cuff, the stitches holding steady. Somewhere above them a tannoy repeated a platform change. Clare unwound the tape, found the row where the fabric needed one more pass, and slid her own needle through the loop without speaking.

When the train pulled out, Mrs Penrose was still on the bench, counting under her breath with the tomato cushion warm in her palm. Clare had tied off the last stitch and laid the sleeve across the counter, the cuff pinned exactly where the tape read eleven.
