Alien, UFO and pizza flash designs

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

Three hand-drawn flash designs sit on tracing paper: an alien holding a pizza slice with daisy-style flowers and stars, a UFO beaming down pizza slices, and a heart with a mandala-style scalloped top, a crescent moon, a small UFO and a pizza slice. All are drawn in bold black outline with dotted and dashed details and simple filled areas, with no shading or colour. A black fineliner pen lies across the page for scale.

Dear Maureen,

You will not believe what came down over the leeks on Tuesday. I was out with the hose at half six, the sky still that orangey colour, when a saucer-shaped thing the size of a bus shelter hummed over the back fence and hung above the runner beans. Then it began dropping pizza. Not rain, mind. Proper slices, pepperoni and one with pineapple that I am still cross about, floating down one at a time like the council sends out leaflets.

Stanley next door says it is the rural broadband people trying out a new thing. I say they would not bother with daisies. Since then the little green chap has been coming round at dusk to sit on the garden wall and eat his slices with the flowers sprouting around his knees, very dignified, dabbing at his chin with a daisy as if it were a napkin. He has never once said hello. He just nods at the sunflowers, which I take as manners.

Yesterday I left him a slice of my own Victoria sponge on the wall. He looked at it for a long while, then at me, then took it in one long-fingered hand and set it beside the pizza box like he was filing it for later.

I have written to the paper. They have not replied. I suspect they think I have been at the sherry. So I am telling you, because you always believed me about the ghost in the church hall. The pineapple slice is in my airing cupboard now, wrapped in foil, in case anyone asks for proof.

Love, Brenda
