Disney character flash sheets on tracing paper

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

Five hand-drawn black line designs are laid out on translucent tracing paper with a marker pen beside them. The subjects are a kissing couple surrounded by stars above a heart and leaves, a rabbit resting on a heart, an apple with a bow and dotted hearts, a Mickey Mouse head balloon, and Minnie Mouse with flowers and an ice cream cone inside a rope circle. The bold outlines are uncoloured and the designs are shown as stencil-ready artwork.

The balloon seller was already knotting ribbon when Nell reached the pier, her mother's veil folded in a carrier bag under one arm. The night before, her mother had married a widower from the coastguard station in a registry office that smelled of carpet cleaner, and had danced to a song about a lighthouse with her eyes shut. Nell had spent the reception counting ceiling tiles.

Dom took the veil without unfolding it, the way he took everything, and hung it on a hook beside the glass apples and the paper bows. He had run the booth since before Nell was born. Years ago he had given her mother a balloon shaped like two round ears on the day her father left. 'Still got the knot,' he said, tapping the tray. 'Your mum tied it wrong. Said it would hold anyway.'

Nell asked what the balloon cost. Dom said nothing, which was not an answer, and handed her a small black one with a silver ribbon curling down its string. Then he showed her the old knot: loop, twist, tuck under, pull, so the rubber never slipped even when the wind came off the water. She practised three times, badly, then once right.

She walked to the railing and let go. The balloon rose over the bandstand and the flags, past the lifeboat house, a dark dot with its ears tilted toward the lighthouse. Her mother would be in a hotel in Eastbourne with a man who snored, and Nell thought, for the first time, that it might not be the worst thing in the world. The ribbon trailed for a moment, then it was gone.
