The seventh doll would not close. Olga pressed the halves together on the kitchen table and felt the wood catch on something small inside, a knock like a knuckle on a door. She had painted all seven herself the winter Piotr went to sea, each face a little more solemn than the last, and on every belly she had drawn a red heart, because he had asked for one thing he could always find.

She unscrewed the sixth, then the fifth, working down through the set until the smallest sat in her palm, no bigger than a thimble. Inside it was a rose pressed flat as a leaf, a strawberry seed wrapped in green thread, and a folded page in his square handwriting. It was dated the week before the boat went out past the breakwater. Keep the heart where the sea cannot reach it, it said, and nothing more.

She had not opened the set since the funeral. The dagger and rose he had sketched for her hung above the stove, its outline gone soft with steam, and she had told herself the dolls were only dolls. Now she read the note again and understood that he had never meant the painted heart. He had meant the one that rattled inside the wood, the thing she had kept hidden because it was the only part of him she was not ready to lose.

Olga lined the seven dolls up along the windowsill, facing the harbour, and left the lid of the smallest one open. Out past the breakwater the water was flat and grey. She took the thread from the strawberry seed and tied it around the thimble-sized doll's waist, then put it back, and went to fill the kettle.
