Always and Forever script tattoos on two hips
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two people stand side by side, showing matching black script lettering on their hips. The left tattoo reads Always and Forever, with an ampersand between the two lines, and the right reads Forever and Always, mirroring the phrase. The linework is dark and even with flowing copperplate-style strokes, and the photograph is in black and white, so no colour ink is shown.

Dear Marjorie, you will not believe what Ruth did on Tuesday. We were at the Palais after the last waltz, the band packing their trumpets into cases, and she dragged me into the ladies' cloakroom under the stairs where Mrs Pocock keeps the hatpins. She had a pencil stub and the back of a Pathé programme. She wrote ALWAYS and FOREVER in that looping hand she copies from the hymn books, then turned the page over and wrote the same two words the other way round, FOREVER and ALWAYS, and said, that is the two of us, one each side.

I laughed at her, of course. I said we would both be arrested for being soppy in public. But she had gone quiet, and when Ruth goes quiet you may as well let her finish. She had found a man called Sid Lowe who does work on the pier between the rides, and she meant to have it done on the Saturday before the regiment goes north. She wanted me there to hold her hand, and to have mine done too, so that whatever happened to either of us, the words would sit on the same side of the same wartime town.
On Saturday the needle buzzed like a wasp in a jam jar. Sid wiped the blood away with a rag that smelled of paraffin and said the lettering was lovely work, very fine linework, which made Ruth go pink. Afterwards we sat on the sea wall with our bandages under our cardigans, eating winkles from a paper cone, and she pulled her sleeve up to show me the ink was already settling into the skin.
It looks like it has always been there, she said. I told her that was rather the point. I'll write again once the tops have healed. Yours in haste, Edie.
