Two people are photographed from behind in black and white, each with a single line of cursive script tattooed across the top of the shoulder blade. The left reads I'll love you forever and the right reads I'll like you for always, with the lines angled slightly downward. The fine black linework is crisp and even, set against smooth skin and a dark background.

"Tell me again why you'd put 'like' on your skin," Maggie said, heaving the last crate of haddock into the hold. She had rope burns across both palms and the dry grin she saved for when she was winning an argument. I told her a promise ought to be honest, and 'like' was the honest word. She said I had never been honest a day in my life, and that nobody with sense promised anything for always, not even the sea.

We went to Sal's back room in Kinmouth the February the Brightwater came in with a broken winch and two weeks of pay owed. Sal drew both lines in one sitting, copying the script from a faded ferry timetable she kept pinned above the kettle. Maggie went first and didn't flinch once, though she swore at the needle in a voice that carried out to the harbour wall. Then it was my turn, and I watched the ink go in while Sal wiped the blood away with a cloth that smelled of pine disinfectant.

Skipper Dunne saw them the next time we were out, when Maggie stretched her arms along the wheelhouse rail and the sleeves of her oilskin slid back. He looked from her shoulder to mine and back again, then passed us the thermos without a word. Later, when the nets were stowed and the gulls had lost interest, he muttered that the sea would eat us both alive for that kind of sentiment.

We still row the same boat. Some mornings she calls me a liar, some mornings I call her a sentimental fool, and the crew has stopped taking bets on which of us will crack first. Whenever the light falls right across the deck, I catch the two lines running down toward the water, one love and one like, both pointed at the same horizon.
