Flash sheet of black ambigram lettering designs with paired words such as Angel and Devil, Faith and Hope, and Loyalty and Betrayal, each with a small caption beneath.

Ambigram lettering flash sheet

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A white background sheet showing sixteen black ink lettering designs arranged in a four by four grid. Each design is an ambigram, a word drawn so it reads in more than one orientation, with some using ornate swirls and others using bold gothic-style capitals. Small caption labels under most pieces give paired words or zodiac signs, and the sheet is entirely black and white.

Dear Ruth,

The banner came back from Hartlepool with the last of the rain still in its seams, and Mr Okonedo hung it over the ring for the first time since the Easter fair. You'll remember the lettering. Gold on red, the word that reads SAINT from the front and SINNER from the back, so that when the lamps go up the boys in the front row can't agree which way to shout. I thought it was a cheap trick when Dad bought it off that sign painter in Leeds. I was wrong about that, as I've been wrong about a good deal this year.

We sold the elephant in March. Nobody told the children, and Tilly still leaves a carrot by the empty pen each morning, saying it's for Bessie's dinner. The tent has three holes now that I can't afford to patch. Mr Okonedo has been sleeping in the wagon with the swings, which is the only dry one left, and he sends his regards and says the sinner in the title is him, for the sake of the tax men.

Here's what I wanted to say. Last Thursday, with nobody in the seats, I climbed the rigging to take the banner down and found the painter's signature stitched inside the hem. Two words, one sideways, one upright, the same as the lettering. I think he was making a joke on us. Or a promise that whatever we turn out to be, the thing reads true either way up. Come home for the spring, Ruth. Bring the good scissors. We'll need someone to cut the banner down properly, and I'd rather it were you.

Love, Mae
