I have been thinking about the word you wrote at the bottom of your last letter, the one you crossed out and then wrote again underneath in the smaller hand you use when you are being brave. You said it in the way your grandmother said it, all soft in the middle, as if it were a thing you could keep warm in a pocket. I have no idea what the Italian is for ever or for coming home, only that you were always stubborn about the spelling, and I stopped correcting you when you were nine.

The kettle is on. I have set two cups out of habit and then put one back. When the Maud Ellen comes round the point, I will be on the quay with my shawl and my bad hip, and I will not say anything clever. I will just hold up your letter so he can see the word. He will know it is mine, and he will know I am waiting.
