Black and white photo of a fine line tattoo on the top of a foot, reading the word hope in script, with the h formed by a ribbon and a heart in the o.

Hope script with ribbon and heart on a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of the top of a foot showing the word hope written in a delicate script. The h is drawn as an awareness ribbon, and the o is formed by an open heart outline. The linework is thin and even with little shading, and the composition places the tattoo centrally with the toes and painted nails visible at the bottom of the frame.

The brush had been dry a fortnight when Mrs Penhallow came up the lane with black crepe folded under her arm and asked me to paint a word that wasn't in my pattern book. Hope, she said. Not in capitals. Joined up, the way her husband wrote his tide tables, so it would look as though someone had taken their time over it.

I had lettered the names of the Tregarth boys on that chapel board in the spring, eleven of them, in gold leaf with the serifs done just so. Nobody had asked me for anything gentler since. So I mixed the black, cut a ribbon into the h where the stem should have been, and let the letters run on from one another like washing on a line. The o would not come round for me. I tried it three times and scraped it off each time with the flat of my knife. In the end I drew a heart and hung the o from its lower curve, and it looked like something being held.

The lane was quiet while I worked. Gulls came down on the slipway and quarrelled over a crab. Mrs Penhallow stood with her back to the wind and didn't watch the brush, only the last letter, which I finished with a flourish I would have cut out of any other job.

When the varnish had set she climbed the ladder herself, touched the wet edge of the e with one finger, and came down without a word. The next morning the tide was out and the boats were in, and somebody had already left a bunch of sea pinks at the foot of the board.
