Anatomical angel on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A standing winged female figure is shown with her muscles, veins, organs and skeleton exposed, with the wings spread wide. The anatomy is rendered with detailed shading in reds, blues, browns and yellows, while the feathers are drawn in fine grey linework with soft shading. The figure fills the frame against plain skin, with the bun-topped head at the upper edge and the feet near the bottom.

Dear Pip, the lift stuck again at three, so I climbed the eight flights to Ward 6 with your sketch folded in my tunic pocket. Nobody on nights wants to hear about the angel you drew on the back of the anatomy plates, but I have looked at her every hour since. She stands with her wings out like a coat hung to dry, and every part of her is showing: the ribs, the ropy blue veins, the little brown knot of liver tucked under the gold of her skin.

Mr Okonedo in bay four asked me at half past three whether angels had hearts. I said they had the usual two, and he laughed until his drain tube pulled, then said his wife had given him the same answer about everything for forty years. I pressed the call bell for the porter and sat on the edge of the sluice sink while the kettle ticked, tracing the line of her femur on your paper with my thumb.

By five the sky over the car park had gone the colour of weak tea. The day staff came in with their coats still zipped, and I handed over the bays one by one. Nobody asked what I had been looking at. Everything on the chart was in order, which is the strangest thing about nights: all the inside work goes on quietly while the outside looks tidy.

I am posting this from the staff room on my break. When you come up in the summer, bring the proper pencils and show me how you shade the feathers so fine they look like breath. I think I finally understand what you meant. She isn't showing us what is wrong with us, only that everything holding us up is still working. Love, Jo.
