Angel with praying hands on upper back

Traditional · Back · Colour · Photo

A full-length angel with outstretched pink wings and long reddish hair stands with its hands pressed together in prayer. The bold black outlines are filled with flat colour, with blue-grey robes that have soft folds and a warm yellow glow behind the head. The tattoo is centred on the upper back, and the photo shows the back of the head and shoulders with a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had been falling since Tuesday, and by Thursday the coaching inn at Hollin Cross had run out of everything except candles and a bread that tasted of the oven it came from. Mrs Aske sent the boy up the ladder with a pot of gold leaf and a brush no wider than a finger, because the old sign over the yard gate had lost its face to the frost, and she wanted something hung there before the carriers came back through.

The angel was the only thing the painter's father had left behind. He had painted her forty years before, a tall woman in a blue robe with her palms pressed together, and the weather had taken her wings first and then her hair. The boy scraped the flaking board with a knife, mixed a little red into the ochre the way he had been shown, and tried to remember how the old man had made the folds fall so they seemed to move even when the wind did not.

By dusk the work was done, and the yard lamps had gone out one by one in the drift. Mrs Aske came out in her shawl to look at it and stood a long while without speaking. Then she said the carriers would not come now, not until the thaw, and that the angel had the look of someone who had decided to wait. The boy said nothing. He only noticed that the snow had stopped falling just above the gate, a small clear circle of dry air, as if the sign had cleared a space of its own.
