Tree with rose canopy on a upper back
Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo
A tree tattoo covers the upper back, with a full canopy of rose-like blooms and leaves in teal, purple, green and blue. The trunk is shaded in orange and brown and ends in black, twisting roots. The bold colour fills and dark outlines give the design a stained glass look against the smooth skin.

The ash at the top of Coldharbour field had been a whip of a thing when Ada Renfrew buried her husband's boots at its foot, and nobody in Pennock Vale thought much of it until the spring it put out roses. They came in every colour the dye-woman kept in her jars, teal and plum and a green like pond weed, and they hung so heavy the branches bowed to the wet grass. Folk walked up in their Sunday shoes to look.

Ada's son Tobias would not look. He had sold the lower meadow to the Harcourt men for the railway, and he said a tree that bloomed out of spite was no concern of his. But each morning the roses opened a little wider, and each morning there was less mud on the path to the mill where he worked, as though the ground had been swept in the night. He kept his hat down and went the long way round.
Late in the summer the Harcourt surveyor came up with his chain and pegs and stood under the canopy to mark the line. Tobias walked beside him, hat in hand for once. When the surveyor reached up for a bloom to shelter from a sudden shower, the stem came away in his fingers, and beneath the black roots the earth gave way to show a pair of worn boots, full of rainwater and petals. Tobias knelt and lifted them out with both hands. He carried them down the hill himself, and the line was drawn in the end a good way round, bending wide of Coldharbour field, where it still bends today.
