Black and grey anatomical heart tattoo with hatched linework and a curved line of script beneath it, on the upper arm.

Anatomical heart with script on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed anatomical heart with vessels and branching arteries is rendered in black and grey. Fine parallel hatching and stippled shading give the heart its volume, and the vessels are left as light, raised lines. A curved line of cursive script follows the lower edge of the heart, and the design sits on the upper arm against a dark background.

Now the big top had a patch in its roof the shape of Ireland, and the only audience left was a row of council inspectors with clipboards.

Tonight Ines, the trapeze girl, would not climb without a beat. She stood at the foot of the rigging with her chalk bag hanging from one finger, glaring up at the rope as if it had insulted her mother. She told him to give her something slow, something like a pulse.

He sat on the upturned crate and thought about the anatomy book he had pinched from a dead doctor's house in Carlow when he was nineteen, its pages foxed and its plates all hatched in fine pen lines, the arteries standing pale on the paper like roots pulled from wet ground. He had carried it in every lorry since. He opened it on his knee, found the heart, and tapped the rim of the drum with two fingers, slow, matching the lub-dub he could feel in his own wrists.

Ines breathed with him. On the third tap she jumped, and the rig took her weight with a sound like a held note. Mo kept the rhythm going, one hand on the skin and the other on the page, and when she caught the bar and swung out over the empty seats he let the beat drop away, because she had found her own.
