Anatomical heart on the wrist
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed anatomical heart with visible vessels sits on the forearm close to the wrist, with the hand relaxed below it. The design uses fine black linework and layered grey shading to show the chambers and surface texture. The photograph is in black and white against a soft, blurred bedsheet background.

The wax had gone soft in my pocket by the time I climbed to the chapel of Hollin Keep, so I kept my thumb pressed to the ventricle while the physician argued with the wind. He wanted the vessels finer. I wanted my hands to stop shaking. We had both been awake since the dissection, and the body on the table had not been in any hurry to explain itself.

Hollin had been a ruin for sixty years, roofless since the fire, its great hall open to rooks. Doctor Pell had taken the north tower for his anatomy lessons because nobody else would have it. He pinned his drawings to the broken mullions and taught the village boys the names of the vessels: aorta, venae cavae, and the small branching arteries that he said ran to every corner of a man like roads to a market town.
I copied those roads in wax, one pale thread at a time, while the light crept across the flagstones. On the last evening I laid the finished heart on the windowsill to cool. The sun came through the empty frame and the wax glowed amber, every vessel lit from within, and for a moment it looked less like something dead than like something sending word out to every corner of the dark country below.
Doctor Pell came up with his lamp and looked for a long time. Then he took a fresh sheet of paper, drew a line from the heart to the broken door, and said only, 'Now they will know the way back.' I never learned who he meant. I kept the wax, and the roads on it, and I still check the window each evening in case the light comes.
