Heartbeat line tattoo on the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A thin, single-line tattoo shows a small outlined heart at the left, followed by a heartbeat trace that runs to the right across the skin. The linework is fine and even, with soft grey shading around the lines and a blurred background. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame, with a strip of fabric visible at the lower edge.

The machine had come up from the surgery in Ystrad on the back of a milk lorry, and nobody at Gelli Colliery knew how to work it except Hannah Pryce, who had once spent a winter copying charts for the doctor and never been thanked for it. She sat on an upturned crate in the first aid hut with the paper feeding out slow and grey, the stylus scratching a line that wavered whenever the lamp outside guttered. Beyond the corrugated wall the cage was still stuck at the four hundred foot mark, and the men at the head gear had stopped smoking.

Idris Morgan had gone down on the Tuesday shift with a fall of stone across his chest. They had brought him up on a stretcher at half past two, grey as slate, and Hannah had clipped the leads to his wrists and ankles with fingers that would not keep still. Now the wires ran through a gap in the window frame to the pit deputy, who sat with his cap in his lap, and the paper showed a steady, small, decent pulse. She counted it against the clock on the wall out of habit, the way her mother used to count bread rising.
At twenty to four the line went flat for three long seconds, long enough for the deputy to stand up and knock his cap against his knee. Then it rose in a tall sharp peak, dropped, and settled into its ordinary rhythm, and Hannah realised she had been holding her breath since the lamp came back on.
When the cage bell finally rang, she tore the strip free, folded it twice and pinned it to the board beside the shift rota. The trace ran off the edge of the paper, and she did not bother to write his name on it. Anyone who worked the pit would know whose heart it was.
