Heart with MUM and arrow on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a small outlined heart tattoo on the shoulder, with the word MUM written in capitals inside it. A thin arrow enters from the upper right and passes through the heart, with its fletching visible at the top. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the soft black and white image is shot from a close angle with a blurred background.

Before the church bell, Agnes Hale lit the oven at the back of the Crooked Loaf, the only bakery in Marrow Lane with bread out before the milk carts. Her son Tom had gone down to the coast the winter before to work the herring boats, and on the morning he left he said that if the ovens were hot, he would always find his way home by the smell of them.

So every morning she shaped the first loaf herself and scored an M into its top with the point of a knife. She set it on the sill that faced the lane. The carters thought it was the baker's mark, and the children thought it kept the damp off the step. Nobody asked why the first loaf was never sold.
On the frost morning of Saint Brannoc's feast, a man came up the lane with one boot split and a canvas bag over his shoulder. He stopped at the sill and looked at the loaf for a long while. Agnes kept her hands in the flour, because she had learned that hands shaking over dough only make it heavy.
"You're the one who scores the M," he said. "Tom talked of nothing else on the crossing. Said his mother could mark a loaf straight as a ruler and tell a lie from a truth by the way the crust cracked."
She took the loaf from the sill, broke it in two, and gave him the warm half. He ate it standing in the lane while the sky went pale over the chimneys. Then she went back to the bench and scored a fresh M into the next loaf, and beside it, with a little more care, a small heart with an arrow through it, so that whoever came up the lane would know which way the ovens were burning.
