Anatomical heart with a chair inside

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

An anatomical heart outline with its vessels and chambers drawn in fine lines, with a small interior scene showing a wooden chair on a striped floor beneath a hanging light bulb. The shading inside the heart and the background uses stippled dots, while the outlines and floor use single lines. The phrase YOU LIVE THERE sits in plain capitals beneath the heart, and the design is on plain pale paper.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The house on Carrow Lane had one chair in its front room, and Mrs Eileen Dunphy said it was the only thing her husband ever bought without arguing. She told the young surveyor this on the step, while the rain came sideways off the Irish Sea and the bulb above the door swung on its flex. He had come to measure the damp, not to listen to a widow's chatter, but she was going to talk whether he stayed or not.

When Tom Dunphy came home from the pit, he never sat in the armchair by the fire. He stood in the doorway with his cap in his hands until the kettle boiled, then he took the wooden chair by the window, the one with the cracked rung, and watched the street. Eileen said the light bulb over it was the only thing in the house that burned all night, because he could not bear the dark in a room where he had to wait. The surveyor asked what he waited for. She shrugged and said the same thing every man on the lane waited for, which was the sound of his own key.

The surveyor wrote down the damp, the cracked rung, the wiring. When he went to leave, the rain had stopped and the lane was steaming. Eileen was standing in the hall with the lamp switched on behind her, and she said, Don't you dare tell the agent about the chair. He said he wouldn't. He did not understand, not then, that some rooms are only ever lived in from one chair, and that the light is left on for whoever comes through the door.
