Anatomical heart with chair and light bulb
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
The design shows an anatomical heart with its upper vessels drawn in fine lines, and a rounded opening inside it reveals a small room with a wooden chair on a floor and a hanging light bulb. The shading is built from stippled dots and hatched lines, with the darkest tones at the edges of the heart and the room. The phrase YOU LIVE THERE is set in capitals beneath the heart, on a plain white background.

Dear Nell, The bulb in the waiting room at Hollin Cross went out on Tuesday, so I have been sitting in the dark with the kettle for company. Mr Pargeter from the parcels office reckons it's the fitting, not the bulb, and he'll see to it when the rail van comes through on Friday. I told him not to bother. I like the room the way it is, just the one chair by the door and the platform lamp throwing its orange across the boards.

You asked in your last letter why I never sold the chair when they closed the booking office. Your mother used to sit in it every morning to wait for the 7.12 to Leeds, back when she still believed your grandad would come off the early shift early. I don't sit in it for her, or for him. I sit in it because it's the only place on the line where a person can stop moving and nobody asks what they're waiting for.
The estate agent came on Thursday with a couple from Harrogate. They stood in the doorway and said what a lovely little room, and the wife asked whether the light was original. I said it was the only thing on the station that still worked properly. Then she asked where I'd live once the place was sold. I said I already did, that a man lives wherever he keeps sitting down. She laughed as if I'd made a joke.
I've propped the door open tonight. If the bulb comes back on, I'll write and tell you. If it doesn't, you'll know I've finally got my ticket out, and that I was sitting down when I went. Love, Dad.
