Anatomical heart with eye on chest
Traditional · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A grey, shaded anatomical heart with visible veins and vessels sits centrally on the upper chest. A stylised eye with a yellow iris, red centre and black pupil is set into the lower half of the heart, and the vessel ends are finished in red. The bold black outlines and shading are set against pale skin, with a green garment at the lower edge of the frame.

You find it in March, when the frost has finally let go of the rhubarb bed at the bottom of Aunt Ivy's garden. Your trowel strikes something that is neither stone nor root, grey and ridged like a fist of wet cord, and when you lift it free the soil slides off to show vessels running out of it, cut clean at the ends. It is heavier than it has any right to be.

Ivy is not surprised. She takes it from you in her gardening gloves, turns it under the kitchen window and says it belongs to the old well, the one the council filled in before the war. Every spring it pushes up something, she says, the way the soil pushes up worms. She sets it on the windowsill beside the geraniums, and then, under the pale skin of its surface, something opens: a yellow iris, a red centre, a pupil like a dropped ink spot. It watches the yard. It watches you.
Over the weeks you learn its habits. It turns towards the sun. It gives a faint beat when the kettle sings. Ivy says you must feed it or it will sink back under, so you bring it cold tea and crushed eggshell, and it drinks, the red-tipped ends flushing like wrists in winter.
In June the well cover is unlatched and the ground around it is soft. You carry the thing down the path in both hands and lower it into the dark. The eye stays open until the last crumb of soil closes over it, and then it is only a garden again, though the rhubarb comes up that year redder than anyone on the street can remember.
