Anatomical heart with shell textures on the chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a chest showing an anatomical heart tattoo, with the aorta and vessels drawn at the top and the lower body filled with overlapping shell or scale-like patterns. The linework is fine and sketch-like, with light shading that gives the heart depth against the skin. The tattoo is centred on the chest with a black bra strap and cup framing the lower edge of the image.

Dear Tom,

The tide was out past the groynes when I started this letter, so I've been writing it on the back of the tide table with the pencil that won't stay sharp. Mum says the cockle sheds are shut till Thursday, which means three days of nothing but the kettle and your old jumper for company.
I found your sketch book under the bench in the back room, the one with the anatomy plates you copied from the doctor's books in Margate. You'd drawn a heart on every other page, each with the great vessel coiled at the top like rope on a bollard, and on the last page you'd filled the chambers with mussel shells overlapping like roof slates. I laughed, then I didn't, because you always said the heart is only a pump until you open it, and then it's a harbour full of things that came in on the tide.
Would you lend me your steady hand on Saturday? The Sadler boy wants his brother's name done in the same place as yours, and I told him the sea doesn't care for names, but I'll do it anyway. Bring the fine nib and the grey ink, not the black, because black makes everything look like it's drowning.
Come home before the spring tides. The shells are still in the bucket by the door, rinsing themselves in the cold water the way you left them.
Love, Nell
