Mechanical eye with gears on the upper back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a human eye with lashes set into a steampunk-style mechanism of gears, screws and ornate filigree panels. The metal parts are shaded in smooth greys with fine highlights, giving a three-dimensional look. Only the iris is rendered in blue, which stands out against the otherwise monochrome piece, and the design sits centrally on the skin of the upper back.

Dear Tom,

You will laugh when I tell you the old man has finally finished the eye. Three winters he has been filing the iris from a watch case, cutting that blue enamel into scrolls his wife said looked like frost on a window. Yesterday he set the lashes on by hand, one hair at a time, then screwed the whole thing into the cabinet above the bench and told me to wind it.

I did. The gears took up their chatter like starlings settling on a wire, and the iris turned, slow, the way a tide turns. Then the brass lid lifted by itself and the pupil swung round to find me. I dropped the key. Mr Harrold did not even look up from his loupe. "It only watches what's been left unfinished," he said, and went back to his soldering.

I have been thinking about that all week. What have we left unfinished? The Corran clock still runs eleven minutes slow. Mrs Pike's music box is missing a tooth. And you, in the letter you sent in March, which I have not answered.

So here it is. I am sorry I let the ship sail without saying goodbye properly. The eye has stopped watching me now. Last night I wound it again, it kept perfect time, and I read your letter over until the lamp ran dry.

Yours, Ada
