Anatomical heart with triangle pattern on a calf
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A tattoo of an anatomical heart with its major vessels visible at the top. The organ is drawn with engraving-style hatched lines and stippled dotwork shading, while the lower half is filled with a solid black and white triangle pattern. The design is in black ink and grey tones on a calf, shown straight on against a plain light background.

Jonah Pell had cut eleven hundred blocks for the harbour printers by the spring the boats stopped coming in, and not one of them had asked him for a heart. Then the anatomist from the inland college arrived on the Tuesday coach with a heart in a glass jar, its great vessels hanging from the top like wet rope, and asked for it to be drawn so that a man could count the chambers from across a room.

Pell worked by lamplight for a fortnight. He took the upper vessels in fine hatched lines, following each curve the way a net follows the weave, and he gave the damp flesh of the lower heart a crust of stipple so it would look cold to the touch. The harbour master came to see the proof and said the bottom half looked unfinished. He wanted the flag pattern the lifeboat used for signals, black and white triangles set edge to edge, so that a drowned man's family would see the same sign on every print. Pell cut them one by one. It took four days, and by the end his eyes ached from looking at nothing but corners.
On the last night Ada Fenn, whose father had gone out in the autumn and not come back, rolled the ink for the first pull while Pell held the paper. The sheet came away black and clean. Under the lamp the triangles on the lower half caught the light in a way the hatching above did not, and the heart seemed to sit still in the middle of the page, with its vessels open at the top like a harbour mouth with the boats coming home through it.
They pinned the print in the chandlery window the next morning. For the rest of that season the men came in from the water and looked at it before they looked at the sea.
