Anatomical heart with peonies design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A hand holding a pen draws an anatomical heart with two large peony flowers, leaves and vessels spilling from the base. The design is built from fine stippled dots that create soft shading across the heart and petals, with bold outlines defining the shapes. The drawing is rendered entirely in black and grey on a white sheet, with the composition centred on the heart.

Dear Tom, the wind took the big top's canvas twice this week, so the whole of Skegness has been eating chips in the rain and nobody wants a painted board. I have spent more hours at the trestle table than on the Waltzer. Mr Pryce from the dodgems wanted a heart drawn for his late wife, the kind you see in the medical books, with her two favourite peonies climbing out of it. He brought a photograph of the flowers in a jam jar and a pound note for the paper.

I worked it all in dots. A stippling pen does not hurry, so neither could I. Each speck of ink took a breath, and the shadow along the left side came up out of the paper like frost on a window. I did the petals last, outlining them hard so they would stand clear of the grey. By Thursday my wrist ached and the lamp was scorching my cheek, but the vessels ran down from the base of the heart exactly as they do in the textbook, thin as cotton thread, and they looked alive.
Pryce came for it on Saturday, just as the generator coughed and the lights went out along the front. He held it up to the last of the sun and said nothing for a long while. Then he asked if I could make the stems longer so they reached the edge of the page. I said I could. I have pinned it above the cash box where the lads on the rides can see it, and I will leave it there until he comes back to tell me what he wants next.
Love, Ada
