Anatomical heart with script quote on upper back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A realistic anatomical heart with visible vessels sits in the centre of the frame, drawn with black outlines and grey shading. Two lines of black cursive script sit above and below the heart, reading as a quote. The tattoo is photographed closely on bare skin across the upper back, with a soft, even light and a blurred background.

Mind the bread tin, you great lump, it's still warm and it's not for your hands. Sit there. Now I'll tell you about Dora Fenn, who cooked on the Saltash Maid for eleven years and never once let a man call her cook until she'd looked at his boots.

She came aboard at Hull with a sea chest, a Bible with the back torn off, and a sheep's heart wrapped in greaseproof paper, which she said was for the mate's supper. It wasn't. The mate went green when she laid it on the board and sliced it along the grain, showing us the four little rooms and the valves like tiny sails. She tapped each one with the knife. 'That's where the blood turns round,' she said. 'Nobody on a ship turns round without a reason. Remember that.'

When the owners sold the Maid to a Greek with a face like a boiled ham, the new master wanted Dora put ashore for arguing with him over the salt beef. She didn't argue. She sat right here with a stub of pencil and wrote on the back of a ration card, in her mother's careful hand: someday we may see a woman king. The crew laughed at it, and then they stopped, because the master had started drinking the stores and nobody could find the key to the spirit locker except Dora.

They say she kept the heart in brine on the top shelf until the day she left. I never saw it again. But the card is pinned above the stove, and every time the boiler sulks I read it out loud, just to hear how it sounds.
